W. Gar Richlin
Gar has spent most of his career working with emerging growth companies. He is currently working with early-stage companies through his firm Richlin/Dale, which he formed with Jim Dale in 2005. Gar’s most recent assignment (January 2011- December 2012) was as President and Chief Operating Officer of AddThis, Inc. the provider of the largest sharing platform for online content. From 2001 to 2005 he was President and Chief Operating Officer of Advertising.com, the leading performance-based provider of marketing solutions for interactive advertisers and publishers. Advertising.com, a venture-backed company, was purchased by AOL in August of 2004 for $435 million. Before joining Advertising.com, Gar was COO and CFO of SITEL Corporation, a New York Stock Exchange global provider of outsourced call-center services to large corporations. Gar joined SITEL from Alex. Brown & Sons, where he was head of investment banking from 1991 to 1998. During that period, Alex. Brown was the leading investment banking firm to emerging growth companies. Prior to joining Alex. Brown, Gar was a partner of Piper & Marbury, the predecessor firm to DLA Piper where he worked primarily with emerging growth companies. Gar received his BA (with honors) from Wesleyan University and his JD from Georgetown University Law Center, where he was an editor of the Georgetown Law Journal.
Jim’s career has been about marketing from day one. Before forming Richlin/Dale LLC with Gar Richlin in August of 2005, from 1995 to 2005, Jim had his own marketing consultancy, working with a variety of businesses including automotive aftermarket, internet commerce and marketing, law firms, banks, magazines, telecommunications, and venture capital companies.
Prior to his marketing consultancy, Jim was in the advertising agency business, having risen from copywriter to President and CEO of W.B.Doner & Company. In the time Jim was with the company, W.B.Doner grew from a regional agency with two offices, Detroit and Baltimore, to a global agency with offices throughout the U.S. and Europe, billing over $500,000,000, representing clients such as BP, Chiquita, Klondike Ice Cream, Arby’s Restaurants, Ford, Coca-Cola, and Fila.
Jim also created an internationally distributed line of humorous greeting cards and has written or co-written several books, including The Power of Nice – Negotiating So Everyone Wins, Especially You; Tiger Woods Made Me Look Like a Genius; Palmer & Weaver – Together We Were Eleven Foot Nine; Bullies, Tyrants, and Impossible People; The Obvious – All You Need to Know in Business. Jim received his BA (with honors) from the University of Michigan.
